After qualifying for the ACM ICPC 2009 World Finals and 2010 World Finals, we decided to host tryouts at the University of Chicago to decide what teams would advance to the 2010 Regionals (which, in turn, determine the teams that qualify for the 2011 World Finals). We held the tryouts last Saturday in the Maclab:
We had three full teams registered, and four contestants who participated in pairs just for fun. We tried to replicate the conditions of an ICPC contest as much as possible: five hours, eight ICPC problems taken from a variety of regionals (download the problems and test cases), one computer per team, automated judging, no Internet access, etc.
Here’s some of the contestants hard at work on the problems:

And we proceeded to announce the final standings and hand out prizes. All of the contestants got a variety of swag provided by Google Chicago:
The winner of the tryouts was Works in Theory (L to R: Matthew Steffen, Denis Pankratov, and Korei Klein). Besides being first in line to the ICPC Regionals, each team member additionally received a $150 Amazon gift certificate, courtesy of Google Chicago:
Next, Terminal 1337ness (L to R: Rafael Turner, Michael Lucy, and Damon Wang). The second-ranked team additionally received a SIM-unlocked and hardware-unlocked Android Dev Phone 1, also courtesy of Google Chicago:
In third place, Gigagargoyles (L to R: Horațiu Dumitru, Bill Waldrep, Falcon Dai):
In fourth place, and competing for fun, Bill Poucher is my Homeboy (Allan Espinosa and Matt Lee):
One of the swag items this team chose was a Google Rubik’s cube, shown here in a fully hacked state:
Finally, and also competing for fun, Sparklepony (not pictured: Zoe Polach and Rina Kelly).
All in all, a great time was had by all. Good luck to our teams as they advance to the ICPC Mid-Central USA Regional Contest! And many thanks to Google Chicago and the Department of Computer Science for their generous sponsorship of the tryouts!
